 Cherng Talay Walking Tour
This walking tour is a maximum of about three to four
kilometers (2-2.5 miles) from the Laguna Beach Resort (LBR) entrance road
into the center of Cherng Talay and back.
There will be
sidewalks inside the resort area but Cherng Talay doesn't
have much in the way of sidewalks - the sidewalks in the
main part of town are often covered with small vendors or
motorcycles. Some of the distance for this walk depends on
how much you wish to explore.
Walk
south heading away from the Resorts complex on the main
Laguna street. Maybe 50 meters from the LBR entrance road
turn right and follow the small winding road and soon you
will be in the village. Continue on that road - go straight
past the canal - and you will pop out on the main street of
the city - it will be obvious. Most of the town is to your
left.
First on your left will be the village veggie market which
opens as early as five in the morning and business will slow
significantly by even 9am. As you continue down the street
towards the traffic light (there are now two) you will also
walk by a variety of local shops and (depending on the time
of day) - small vendors selling food and bbq items. At the
traffic light is the night market (currently Wednesdays and
Sundays).
Go straight at the traffic light and you immediately run
into a motorcycle taxi stand (good for a 20 baht ride back
to LBR if you get too hot or tired) and will also run into a
7-11 and many small Thai restaurants and shops as you
continue. As you continue (if you want to add a kilometer
or two to your walk) will be the Cherng Talay Wat - and a
bit later the Farang Restaurant (excellent AND inexpensive)
OR - Turn left at that traffic light and walk down the LONG
way back to LBR (maybe 2km?) - just follow the signs to
Laguna. When you walk past the second traffic light you will
enter an area of primarily Western food type places - but
also a few Thai restaurants - even Indian food shop - and a
couple of the island's upscale restaurants - many modest to
upscale massage places (Thai Carnation is middle
of the road - about B350 for a one-hour full-body oil
massage - usually good skilled therapists). Also, many condo
sales places (unfortunately) - but also many shops and
mini-markets etc.
Make the walk in the early morning or evenings to avoid
the heat of the day.
